Cutey Honey

Last Updated: Jul 02, 2014

7.00 (above average) I only care for the New Cutey Honey and the original 70's TV series, I don't care for Flash and Re:. What I love about the original is the nostalgia value as a great piece of old-school anime, despite the villain-of-the week plot that the original has, I can see where the actual plot is going as the Panther Claw organization is out to destroy Honey and those she's closest to. No matter how strong Honey is, the people around her get hurt or even killed (midway during the original, someone close to Honey gets killed) and Honey's battle against the Panther Claw is a hard one. The one thing about the original that disappointed me was the ending and the animation direction could've been more consistent. With New, I love the more mature aspect of it with the hard ecchi situations and violence and the OP theme of the first half of the OVA is badass, although I think the OP of the second half is skippable. Honey's bond with Chokkei is really sweet and endearing. It's a shame that NCH didn't have more episodes made.

8.00 (good) Recently rewatched the anime in glorious BD format and it looks truly amazing, it comes to show how well made older anime was. I also gained a new appreciation for the OVA and it's truly an underrated gem. It has an original story and a variety of good characters including the courageous and sexy Mia Alice, badass Pai Thunder, and menacing antagonist Gil Berg. The camaraderie of the Dangaioh Team is truly soild and they bring out the best in each other by combining their strengths into one when they fight against their enemies. Amazing voice acting by the seiyuu cast and Mayumi Shou was great as Mia, one of her best character roles she's done and Shigeru Chiba was brilliant as Gil, he does fantastic villain voices. I hope Discotek will rescue license this series to give it the proper stateside release it deserves to have. The OP & ED songs are truly awesome and fun to listen to, and Mitsuko Horie has an amazing voice.

6.00 (average) With the OVA made for this series I was disappointed with the lack of screen time for amazing characters like Dimitri and Morrigan who are interesting characters individually and have a great chemistry when they have a scene together. I would've liked it better if the OVA had them as the central focus. I wasn't too thrilled with much of the OVA focused on Donovan, his character didn't interest me nor did Pyron either. The animation was pretty well made as its' character designer was Shukou Murase, the man behind the amazing character designs for Gundam Wing. Rei Sakuma delivered a sexy performance as Morrigan, she did a great job voicing the character. The ED song was quite good as well, it had a fun beat to it and kind of felt like it would also fit the Bastard!! series as well.

8.00 (good) Devil Hunter Yohko is a pretty awesome OVA series, I enjoyed the concept of the series of it being a supernatural version of Sailor Moon, even though Yohko predates the Sailor Moon anime series, there are similarities there with Yohko being as boy-crazy as Usagi and having similar hairstyles, but with each episode Yohko develops into a badass demon slayer. Take note that the series is only five episodes long with a music video collection included also the first episode contains sexual situations and the series henshin sequences are fanservice shots, so DHY also has some Cutey Honey undertones as the henshin sequences contain full frontal nudity. Aya Hisakawa, best known as Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury voices Yohko and she does a fantastic job with the role and she also voiced Yohko's dark twin cousin Ayako in the final episode, and the song "Touch My Heart" is a well arranged song as Hisakawa performs it as a duet between her two characters. I wish that DHY was a longer series though, for I enjoyed this series very much and how Yohko develops as a character.

I truly reccommend this series for fans of horror and psychological anime. Junko Iwao was excellent as the lead, Jun and I loved her performance.

7.00 (above average) Both the TV series and Flash very very good and fun to watch, however Flash does more for me with the performances of Rica Matsumoto and Mariko Kouda as Kei and Yuri, especially with 2 OP and ED songs each that both seiyuu sang that I enjoy listening to and different stories each Mission had, plus it Flash has character development for Kei and Yuri and they evolve throughout their series. Also Flash has more interesting episodes, especially for Missions 1-2 as there is actual overarching story arcs in both of them. The 3rd is really amazing too such as the ones with Kei protecting a baby from assassins and Yuri inspiring a young boy in what real relationships are like between two people. Plus, there was a balance in the dramatic and comedic in Flash. Unfortunately, the original sticks to the episodic style and doesn't compensate by having character development, the two standalone OVA's Nolandia and 005 are not that great, especially the former which was painful to watch, and the movie EDEN is a slight improvement, but nothing spectacular. I didn't like the shift in animation style from the TV series to the OVA's in the original, the OVA's was too cartoonish and I prefer the TV series designs better.

7.00 (above average) Pretty fun series, it's kind of like the rowdy cousin of Patlabor with the wild bunch of characters and the lead heroine, Leona Ozaki is very much like Noa Izumi with the fiery attitude and strong love for her tank Bonaparte akin to how Noa feels towards her Labor, Alphonse. I pretty much get why Leona's character design changed in the 1993 OVA to try to make one thing about her different from Noa as the 1988 OVA version of Leona looks so much like Patlabor's heroine. I like Brenten, his gung-ho nature is what makes him such and interesting and fun character. Annapuma and Unipuma are quite fun with their antics and pretty good foils for Leona. I enjoyed the 1993 OVA more because I feel it's the one that had aged better, I like the plot in this one the best, characters like the Chief and Megane have an active role, and has awesome OP & ED songs. One negative issue I have with the 1993 OVA is that Anna and Uni don't have that bad girl allure like how they were designed in the 1988 OVA. Both Hiromi Tsuru and Rei Sakuma were amazing as Leona of the 1988 and 1993 OVA's respectively and each did well in the role. It would be amazing if this series received a reboot, just as long as it maintains its gritty feel and hard edge.

9.00 (very good) Watched the OVA's covering the first Doukyuusei series and it was good, Misa Tanaka is best girl and the most interesting, I liked her chemistry with Wataru best. Mai Sakuragi was a pretty great character too and liked her character arc. I like Doukyuusei 2, it's really well animated and heroine Yui Narusawa is a cutie. It's great to see Misa from the original series appear in the sequel. In my opinion, the 1st Doukyuusei has the best female cast and scenario. I think the voice acting of the characters were better voiced in the Sega Saturn release of the VN; it would've been nice if there had been a 12 episode remake using the seiyuu who voiced the roles for the game and had given the adult characters more of a role, like the school teacher Yoshiko Serizawa. The Doukyuusei VN's were groundbreaking for its' time and both are timeless classics with how it was the origin and likely inspiration for adult dating sim VN's that came after, the variety of character types for their female cast of characters, story content, and character arcs. Doukyuusei proves that Elf made memorable VN's alongside its' sister series Kakyuusei.

6.00 (average) The plot and the feels between Etoh and Marlene was what I liked about this anime. It has a bittersweet ending though, especially for best girl Marlene. The sex scenes Etoh has with other women before Marlene are meaningless and irrelevant, especially with that dumb random chick in the third episode that comes out of nowhere and had just met the guy. The one girl who should've had a sex scene in the third episode with Etoh was the other female lead Natasha as there was chemistry between them as well. I Pretty much the only sex scene that really mattered was the one with Marlene. This really doesn't work well as a hentai as it is rather underwhelming and works better as a mature R+ anime.

Dream Hunter REM

Last Updated: Mar 08, 2018

7.00 (above average) A plus for this series is for presenting the cute heroine, Rem Ayanokouji as a strong, independent girl who does what she can to get herself out of a jam rather than have the male character save her like anime shows do most of the time. I also like that she has innocent charms that aren't bogged down by making her some sex object for perverse otaku's like they do in modern anime, even though her battle outfit is the skimpy bikini battle armor that was a popular fanservice tool for 80's-90's anime. Although the actual pilot was a hentai, it was better to make this a mainstream series. However, I think the animation production could've been done by a better studio, like AIC or Animate Film who I think do a good job in making old school moe anime. Another minus is that the romance is practically nonexistent between Rem and her paramours and rather redundant. I would recommend this series to those who can stomach cute, moe characters like Rem who at times ends up in violent situations when attacked by her adversaries. Dream Hunter Rem's is my favorite Rem.

8.00 (good) It's great to see that another of Kouta Hirano's works adapted into an anime, after watching the preview OVA it was an instant hook for me. I like how the scenario is developed surrounding the historical figures used in this series and how they're presented. It's always welcoming to see Oda Nobunaga portrayed in anime/manga like this series has done as a manly badass as I get annoyed at the gender-bent portrayals of him. I feel this series did an amazing job in mingling together the various historical figures from differing time periods. Overall, it's an entertaining series that's both action packed and funny (although there are some strange parts) with great voice acting by the seiyuu cast.

Fate/Apocrypha

Last Updated: Apr 04, 2018

9.00 (very good) It's an epic series alongside Fate/Zero with a great cast of characters and engaging story. This is my personal best Fate spinoff and I like Apocrypha more than the original Fate anime and UBW. Apocrypha has fantastic battles between Servants in how visceral they are, a fantastic score by Masaru Yokoyama, the pacing of the story, and surprising plot twists. I love the first ED "Désir" by GARNiDELiA, however LiSA's "ASH" and newcomer ASCA's "KOE" has surpassed it as my favorite songs. Sieg is courageous, strong in will and in heart, sweet-natured, and has clear goals that he sets out to accomplish without hesitation, and has great character development. Astolfo is just so adorable, courageous, fun, and full of life. I'm so happy that he got free of that awful Master he had and with a kind Master in Sieg. Mordred is truly a hardcore badass, she is an amazing character and the Master/Servant bond she has with Shishigou was solid. I love the relationships shared between the pairings of Shirou x Semiramis and Sieg x Ruler, both of these couples have great chemistry and are beautiful together. Seeing Waver Velvet/Lord El Melloi II is a treat and hope they make a movie about his story set in the Apocrypha universe.

Fate/EXTRA

Last Updated: Apr 04, 2018

2.00 (very poor) My score only reflects the anime adaptation Last Encore and it's a really disappointing series, it's as bad as the Rewrite anime adaptation was. Both series are so intricate in the content of the source material that a short anime series doesn't do it justice. Last Encore isn't engaging like the 3 Fate routes, Zero, and Apocrypha are. The battles between Masters and Servants feel so formulaic and lackluster. Male-type Hakuno is a pretty bland MC, he has nothing in his personality that makes me want to be invested in him. Saber is the only decent element and not even Rin can save this failure of an anime. I would've given it a point extra if Tamamo no Mae was used as the Caster for the anime. The OP sequence is so terrible, it has nothing to draw in a viewer like including action of other characters. I dislike Sayuri's song, I'm not fond of her voice. Of all Fate anime adaptations, to me Last Encore is the worst.

Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA

Last Updated: Mar 17, 2018

6.00 (average) The good things about this spinoff is that Illya has a much better life in this alternate universe series where she is in happy home life with family and has a great friend in Miyu. The movie offered me a new perspective of the series when it told Miyu's backstory of how she met her Shirou and how he wanted to give her happiness in which he fought tooth and nail for leading up to his wish that culminated into Miyu's fateful meeting with Illya and how she was able to lead a normal life in Illya's world, making new friends and going to school, up until the events of 3rei. I dislike the loli fanservice of the series, how annoying Luvia is when she belittles Rin, the annoying Kaleido Ruby and its' antics, the stupid filler episodes of 2wei Herz!, and the annoying antagonists of the Ainsworth family.

Last Updated: Apr 09, 2021

8.00 (good) Fate-I like this route as it ties together elements of the previous Holy Grail War in the resolution of the Saber/Gilgamesh conflict and Saber coming to terms with her feelings of Kiritsugu through Shirou. Shirou's duel against Kirei in the final act in his present level at that point makes more sense than against Gilgamesh in UBW. The 2006 anime was enjoyable to watch, I liked that it included elements of the the other two routes. I love the songs by Sachi Tainaka for the anime and her rendition of "THIS ILLUSION/disillusion" is my favorite. In how I feel about Shirou, yes he's got too many flaws working against him and the that was a negative point in the 2006 anime adaptation, I believe that he's a better character in HF and UBW.

Unlimited Blade Works-Although the action scenes are strong in this route, the story-line falls flat. Rin is a great heroine, but I feel her route didn't do much for her character. Saber, Sakura, Illya, and Rider were not given good roles in UBW. Caster and Shinji are the absolute worst characters in UBW. Issues I have with the 2014-15 adaptation is character design work in areas and the chemistry between Shirou and Rin was lacking (If Tomonori Sudou had directed UBW, he definitely would've shown strong chemistry between Shirou and Rin). The songs for the 2014-15 adaptation were amazing and they're great to listen to.

Heaven's Feel-My favorite route of FSN - the story is more engaging, the dynamics played out with the primary heroine Sakura showing interesting facets of her character, Rin and Sakura's relationship being explored, Rider having a much better role than the other two routes, and I consider Ilya a heroine in her role. Shirou's character development is amazing and he became a badass in the final movie, especially in the duel against Kirei. The romance and chemistry between Shirou and Sakura was absolutely beautiful. Tomonori Sudou's work as director was brilliant - with the positive reception of the trilogy, he crafted a true masterwork. Yuki Kajiura's music is breathtakingly haunting and enchanting, she always does great music scores for anime projects she's involved in. Now that the trilogy is complete, I feel the creative staff did this route justice.

Fate/Zero

Last Updated: Nov 13, 2014

9.00 (very good) This series is pure awesomeness, from the gripping story to the various characters makes Fate/Zero one hell of a great anime. My favorite heroine in this series is definitely Irisviel von Einzbern, she is truly beautiful and sweet in every way plus she has many layers to her character. The relationship between her and Saber is quite endearing and what she shares with Kiritsugu as his wife is truly amazing. The characters are truly well crafted and I like a majority of the characters (except for that old serpent, Zouken...he's the worst), each has their own unique personality to each their own and philosophy. The best developed character in Zero is Waver Velvet in through his relationship with Rider and how his servant inspired him to achieve great things, also the two are the best Master/Servant pair because of how well they work together. Rin is so cute and I love the episode centered on her, with how it showed that she was courageous even as a little girl. This series is truly deserving of its' popularity and I'm so fond of this series, the best of TYPE-MOON's series they've made. However the only disappointment is the lack of interaction between Kiritsugu and Kirei, I would've liked it if they had more encounters with each other. Overall, I like Zero more than stay night...the story is more engaging in Zero, although Heavens Feel is the best companion piece to Zero.

Rin Matsuoka came to be my favorite character of the entire series and he really developed as a character in the second season. The relationships of the characters are endearing in their camaraderie to one another and how each will do whatever it takes to support the one they're closest to. The anime series has a great cast of seiyuu and I loved Mamoru Miyano's performance as Rin and Yoshimasa Hosoya as Sousuke, but I feel Makoto and Nagisa's voices as children could've been performed by seiyuu who have a better grasp of voicing young boys like Houko Kuwashima and Mamiko Noto.

8.00 (good) I loved the neat blend of mecha action, political intrigue, and high school hijinks from the first season, TSR is another great season because it showcases KyoAni at its' best for their animation work and the plot is really top-notch. Fumoffu is okay and has its' funny moments, but it showcases too much of Kaname's "tsun" nature, whereas I felt the first and TSR gave more of a balance. I love Sousuke and Kaname as a couple, they are really good together when Kaname isn't in her "tsun" mode, the best scenes are when she and Sousuke have their tender moments together. However my favorite scene of the pair is in TSR when Kaname is giving Sousuke his haircut, great chemistry right there. Mikuni Shimokawa's songs are amazing and they're always great to listen to, Tamaru Yamada's songs for Invisible Victory were amazing too. Hopefully a fifth season will be green-lit, I was disappointed that the latest season was only 12 episodes, it deserved 24 IMO.

8.00 (good) This is just my feelings on the anime series, Ga-Rei: Zero and I thought it was a pretty good series with an engaging plot. I found Yomi Isayama an interesting character in how she develops throughout the series. Sure the first two episodes can cause some confusion and I do think it could have followed a more chronological setup to see Yomi's transformation from protagonist to antagonist come naturally, rather than know the outcome as the series progresses. It was quite the interesting transformation though for Yomi and she's one of the few characters in anime I feel carries that dual role as a protagonist and the fall from grace she experiences that leads her to become an antagonist quite well. I like the OP & ED songs the seiyuu of Kagura and Yomi and a great songs to listen to. 7.00 (above average) This was a pretty engaging anime and I liked the overall atmosphere of the series with its' variety of characters. I liked the three main characters, they were interesting and had qualities in each of them that makes them worth investing in. Gangsta has a great seiyuu cast, Junichi Suwabe is charming and sexy as Worick and Kenjiro Tsuda (adult) and Natsuki Hanae (teen) in their portrayals as the deaf Nicolas. I loved Alex' song she sang at the Bastard nightclub, Mamiko Noto has such a beautiful singing voice. Alex herself is beautifully made with her curvaceous body and full lips, she's certainly has greater sex appeal than those in lame ecchi harem shows. It's a shame that the animation production studio that made Gangsta is defunct, seeing how there was an open ending and various plot threads relating to the characters were left hanging that would have been resolved with a second season. It would be nice if another anime company would consider making a second season for Gangsta, but I'm not going to set my hopes too high on it happening and read the source material to find out what happens next.

3.00 (poor) Such a disappointing anime this was and not well made either, there were so many flaws with it that doesn't do the original story justice. The issues I had with this series is a number of things such as the horrible choice in OP & ED songs. Those songs were just plain awful, especially the OP as it was the kind of song you'd hear in a show set in the modern day that's a rom-com, not a historical drama. The drama was badly executed due in part to the series being rushed as hell and having no room to feel anything for its' characters. I think the story of Lady Murasaki was underplayed as well, I think there wasn't much development for her character and feel she should've been the central female lead as this was her story of Genji. I believe Dezaki should've made this back in the 90's after Oniisama e... as conditions were right back then to adapt this complex type of story and cultivate it like a fine wine. Being made in the late 2000's did not serve this series well. Also, I disliked the over-filtering and art direction it had, the overall look of this anime wasn't designed very well because of it.

Her battle outfit is pretty awesome too! Hiromi Tsuru did a good job in voicing the character and among many of my favorite performances by her and Shuuichi Ikeda is great too in his role as the villain. The artwork is splendid for an 80's piece and designed by Mutsumi Inomata, and she creates lovely characters, my favorite of works being Utsunomiko and characters like Velvet and Lailah of Tales of Berseria & Zestiria respectively.

The characters were an interesting and eccentric bunch, especially Meiko and her shikigami with their antics which is one the reasons why I liked this anime and another is having a great cast of seiyuu portraying the characters and each did an amazing job with their respective character. The OP & ED songs are great to listen to as well, I liked Yumiko Kosaka's song the best. I would've liked to see more development for Johannes von Schicksal and Paylor Sakaki's characters, especially when it comes to their philosophies that was never fully explored. This series was a little too heavy on the CGI where it looked tacky and overall this series was ufotable's weakest series they've adapted.

8.00 (good) Like Bakuretsu Hunters, Golden Boy is also another favorite of mine in the ecchi category as the characters portrayed in ecchi situations are mainly adult women, which modern anime is seriously lacking in these days. Also the breasts are at a reasonable size as well and compliment the figure of the female characters, rather than overwhelm like those in High School DxD and Queen's Blade. Also the male protagonist Kentaro Oe is another example besides Bastard's!! Dark Schneider of what an ecchi male lead should be...despite Kentaro's weird toilet fetish, his outgoing and helpful nature towards the young women he meets is what shapes him as a character, and he's a pretty smart guy with a good head on his shoulders who's a jack of all trades. So watch this series to see what a fine ecchi series this is.

7.00 (above average) The strength of this series is definitely the progression of the story and the development of the characters, I was pleasantly surprised at how early on Theo and Siluca became a couple which is a good thing to see. However it fell short in the lack of exploring the mythos of the world of Grancrest and what little was told was too vague. I love the songs by Mashiro Ayano and ASCA, they're really amazing and enjoyable to listen to.

7.00 (above average) I'm going to take the objective approach with this movie and say it did a good job depicting the struggles of the common man during late World War II Japan and that life was harsh for civilians who had to ration out food and were forced to sell precious items to eat. From a subjective view, I understood the aunt's POV of what she and her own family had to do to survive and was frustrated that Seita wasn't pulling his own weight to contribute and at the same time provide for Setsuko. However, the aunt wasn't in the right either by treating Seita and Setsuko the way she did that led to the tragic circumstances the siblings ended up in. In the end, I concluded both Seita and the aunt were flawed characters in how they were portrayed and that the movie teaches an important lesson in how personal pride can have major consequences. The emotional impact was lessened for me as the start of the film shows what happens to Seita and what his fate would be as the film progressed. Otherwise, this is a movie I think I can only watch once.

8.00 (good) My feelings towards this anime adaptation is positive, although 8-Bit doesn't have a stellar reputation in how they adapt VN's, this anime was an enjoyable watch. Amane Suou and Kazuki Kazami are my personal best girls in this series, I'm glad their story was the main focus as it was the most engaging and heartrending for me. Their friendship was one of the best highlights of this arc. I felt Yumiko Sakaki's character arc could've been given an extra episode to her story in the anime. Yuuji's tragic backstory covered in Meikyuu and even through the terrible things he had to endure in his young life he grew into an admirable young man, caring for the girls around him and treating them well as seen in the present timeline, show the strength of his character. The story between him and Asako that was told in the first few episodes of Rakuen was pretty good, however I don't believe sex should've been part of the equation of their relationship. I really enjoyed Rakuen because the action, plot, character development was solid and strong. This series is by far the best VN adaptation 8-Bit has made of the works I've seen.

8.00 (good) A pretty good OVA, I wish there had been more episodes made back then. Seiyuu Miki Itou was great as Alita and I enjoyed her performance. I love the ED song by Kaori Akima, "Cyborg Mermaid", it's a truly beautiful and enchanting song. The live-action movie was very enjoyable and well made with respect to the source materials of the manga and the OVA and the cast gave remarkable performances of their character roles, especially Rosa Salazar as Alita and Christoph Waltz as Ido. I encourage those who love Battle Angel to see the live-action movie. Hopefully a sequel film will be made or a full anime series reboot.

6.00 (average) A decent action packed series, but could've benefitted more with a TV series than a mere OVA.

8.00 (good) It's is a pretty good anime, quite original for a fantasy series and I was surprised at the end the 4th episode with the feels that take place, really hard hitting and heartbreaking. The series kind of has AnoHana vibes in a way even though the main characters weren't childhood friends, but they have a pretty sweet bond as comrades and what happens at the end of the 4th episode in how it affected the group. When Mary comes into the group, I liked how they were able to heal each of their broken hearts by opening up to one another with time, growing stronger together and always having each others backs. I can't choose whose the best girl of the series, all three were really good characters in each of their own way and how they grew as characters. The OP song is quite amazing and has a nice beat to it.
